Description of Work Unit

Student Disability Center ( SDC ) is part of the Office of Inclusive Excellence, specifically one of the seven Student Diversity Programs and Services offices that support underrepresented students at Colorado State University ( CSU ). SDC is responsible for the assessment, recommendation and provision of academic accommodations for students with disabilities, including those with chronic physical or mental health conditions. In addition, SDC acts as an advocate on behalf of students with disabilities to promote and support inclusive activities and policies in response to federal mandates of non-discrimination. SDC acts as a partner with students, faculty and staff to ensure students with disabilities are afforded an equal opportunity to benefit from, and participate in, all activities and programs sponsored by the university with an emphasis on retention and graduation.

Position Summary

Determines the appropriate academic accommodations for new and continuing students with disabilities each semester. Accommodation determination is based on the information provided by the student including appropriate documentation from qualified professionals. Other support includes, but is not limited to, problem solving strategies, and referral to other campus resources. Acts as an advocate for students with disabilities to ensure they are afforded an equal opportunity to benefit from, and participate in, any program sponsored by the university. As part of the SDC professional staff, encompasses the role of liaison, active consultant, and representative of the office to other entities on and off campus as well as an active team member with the office and within the SDPS cluster. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Access and Accommodation.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in education, social work, psychology, or other human service related area and a minimum of one year full-time professional experience working with individuals with disabilities OR a Master’s degree from an accredited institution.

  • Working knowledge regarding the federal non-discriminatory mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments.

  • Demonstrated computer application skills (MS Word and Excel and specific scheduling programs) and prior experience with database entry

  • Excellent written communication skills, including experience making presentations to a variety of audiences

  • Demonstrated commitment to, and experience working with, individuals who have disabilities as an identity

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, counseling, psychology, social work or other disability related fields and an equivalent of one year experience working with individuals with disabilities in a higher educational environment

  • Experience working with, and familiarity of the unique needs of, individuals with specific disabilities (e.g., autism spectrum, head injuries, wounded warriors, etc.)

  • Demonstrated computer application skills (MS Word and Excel and specific scheduling programs) and prior experience with database entry

  • Knowledge of different learning strategies that would enhance student success

  • Experience in advising, counseling, teaching, and/or supervising individuals from diverse backgrounds, or with a broad spectrum of disabilities, from a perspective that includes the intersections of gender, race, sexual orientation, disability and other significant aspects of identity.

  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively with a variety of constituents including students, faculty, staff, and community.

  • Ability to collaborate within and across departments.

  • Serve as the first point of contact with new students and contact for continuing students for academic accommodation requests

  • Gather and assess information provided by new and continuing students regarding their need for academic and housing accommodations at the beginning of every semester and as needed throughout the semester

  • Communicate the need for accommodations to appropriate personnel (e.g., faculty or other university staff) in a timely manner

  • Determine the need for additional academic, personal, social, and cultural support of students and assist in developing appropriate plans for addressing these issues

  • Discuss, advise, support and/or assist the student in problem solving to resolve crises

  • Provide appropriate referrals to university resources, including but not limited to Academic Advancement Center, Assistive Technology Resource Center, Student Case Management, Student Financial Services, Health Network, etc.

  • Maintain and keep current student information in electronic files to document student participation

  • Serve as a positive role model for Colorado State University students
