Who will you be working with?

Wabtec is leading the transition to low-carbon rail operations with FLXdrive — the world’s first 100% battery-electric, heavy-haul locomotive. The heart of the FLXdrive system is the liquid-cooled battery technology and proprietary thermal management system developed to optimize energy output and battery life. You will be working with a strong team that is developing world class energy storage solutions and integrating them into these locomotives. You must be able to work with key stakeholders with an open mindset to help develop product roadmaps, improve product competitiveness and service readiness.

How will you make a difference?

The Senior Engineer will be responsible for developing our next generation of Energy Storage products for locomotive and mining applications. The ideal candidate will have experience in electromechanical systems and/or battery packaging. This engineer will work with other subsystems and systems, develop requirements, provide system level packaging solutions and safety strategies. This Engineer will also collaborate with customer facing and sourcing teams to develop a roadmap for future battery technologies, services, and reliability support strategies.

What do we want to know about you?

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent engineering degree.

  • Hands-on design experience

  • Experience interpreting and using standards and regulations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Battery packaging experience

  • Electromechanical systems experience

  • Experience with Energy Storage safety standards and regulations

  • Experience with manufacturing process and automation

  • Understanding of electrical and control systems

  • Strong understanding of material properties, sheet metal applications and welding methodologies

  • Project Management

  • Sig Sigma Green Belt/ Black Belt

What will your typical day look like?

  • Lead design and development efforts for current products, including battery packs, thermal management systems and integration of these systems into our locomotives

  • As the Subject Matter Expert provide technical leadership to the team, mentor junior members

  • Drive project initiatives across a matrixed organization, communicate progress cross functionally and to all levels of the organization including C-suite

  • Develop long term strategic relationships with suppliers and industry groups

  • Collaborate with service and reliability teams to develop customer support strategy and develop cost optimal reliability solutions.

  • Identify cost saving opportunities

  • Perform detailed design analysis (FEA, Thermal Models, Bolted Joints, Tolerance stack ups, Design reviews)
