Boston University Lecturer in Lighting Production, College of Fine Arts, School of Theatre in BOSTON, Massachusetts

The Lecturer for Lighting Production will provide educational experiences in lighting production for DPM, Performance, and other interested students. This will involve classroom, lab, production, and logistical support. Teaching will include, but not be limited to, courses in Lighting Crafts, Vectorworks, and related production and technical skills.

In addition to teaching, the Lecturer for Lighting Production will mentor students and oversee the safe, timely, and accurate preparation, load-in, focus and strike for all School of Theatre and Opera Institute productions within the Booth Theatre Complex, performance spaces at the College of Fine Arts building, and external venues used by the School. The position will coordinate with the Lighting Design Faculty and the Lighting and Sound Shop Manager the educational and logistical needs of the students in the production process.

Position Details:

Classroom Education: (30%)

Acts as instructor for 2-3 courses per semester that may include; Language and Craft of Theatre, Vectorworks Drafting, Lighting Crafts and other subjects in conjunction with Lighting Design faculty. Participates in scheduled Lighting Department meetings and works closely with Lighting Design faculty to mentor and evaluate student’s Production assignments. Where skills permit, instructs in other independent and directed studies related to Lighting Production.

Education and Support for School of Theatre/Opera Institute Production: (70%)

Mentors students throughout assignments during the pre-production and production process. This includes oversight of student production scheduling, and attending weekly production meetings as needed, scheduling meetings to review student drafting and production planning for hang and focus, and supervising production budgets in coordination with department Production Manager and Lighting and Sound Shop Manager. In addition, this position advises students on proper production techniques and rigging methods, and guides students in the most effective use of personnel and delegating responsibilities to production crews.

Supervises students during load-in and focus, run, and load-out for all School of Theatre and Opera Institute productions and constantly evaluates the probability of safe and on-time completion of these tasks.

Advises students on purchasing and budgeting procedures, helps less experienced students learn during on-the-job training, fosters good communication skills, investigates and arbitrates all student personnel issues, including issues of attendance, schedule, assignments, work attitude, and competence.

Required Skills

Required qualifications include BFA or BA, experience mentoring or supervising students and interns, and a minimum 4 years professional experience. MFA in Lighting or equivalent professional/teaching experience preferred.
