Boston Public Schools Community Connection Coordinator (Repost) (SY23-24) in Boston, Massachusetts

Reports to: Chief of Safety Services and/or Designee Overview: Under the collaborative efforts of the Office of Safety Services and the Division of Student Support, these roles seek to engage students with a proactive focus on providing access to resources and support tailored to the student's individual needs in pursuit of building positive relationships in accordance with BPS strategic goals. The desired outcomes of the position are to 1) add value to the district’s Multi-Tiered levels of support for non clinical resources at tier three that primarily focus on supporting students and their families’ needs through a public health lens, including addressing food insecurity, providing resources for stable housing, mental health support, and economic opportunity; 2) filling a gap of having dedicated BPS staff working shifts that extend beyond the school day in order to be more visible in the community; making more authentic connects with students, families, community based organizations, and attend neighborhood specific meetings; and 3) keeping school based staff informed of community based opportunities for success, and activities for our students, families, and staff as well as barriers that may be impeding access to student learning or safety. These positions will work through a trauma informed lens to increase the use of restorative practices and increase the focus on enhancing the conflict resolution skills of our young people. The Community Connection Coordinator seeks to support BPS youth with a lens geared towards empowering our young people to advocate for themselves in a productive and restorative manner. This position builds intentional relationships with our students to promote and support behavioral changes and strategic support and safety planning, through appropriate outreach, engagement and service coordination both with school staff and community partners. The Community Connection Coordinator is responsible for supporting and collaborating with all relevant (BPS) departments - in the establishment of district-wide systems focused on student success and the mitigation of safety incidents in order to cultivate learning environments that are safe, secure, supportive, and affirming for purposes of advancing the mission of the Boston Public Schools. Responsibilities: This position will work closely with school based Support Staff, central BPS support staff, families, community and city partners to create a continuum of resources/supports in response to impactful incidents that occur in the community and in school. Works with school administration and city based support agencies to collaborate around service delivery efforts for young people in order to create wraparound and holistic supports that extend beyond the school environment, while adhering to FERPA and BPS Information Sharing and Report writing policies to maintain student confidentiality. Collaborate with students, school leaders, the Office of Safety Services, and the Division of Student Support to prioritize community locations and plans of action to maximize proactive and responsive support in order to determine school-specific recommended strategies. This may include attending school based SST meetings as needed, meeting students during advisory periods, or meetings with students and families both in school or in their community. Provide support for BPS staff as needed in the safe transition of students including, but not limited to, classroom transitions, morning arrivals, afternoon dismissals. This will also include onsite support at transportation hubs to encourage positive student engagement and support safe transitions as they travel to and from school. Areas include but are not limited to MBTA Stations, Parks, BPS Athletics Events, etc. Conduct individual and group meetings with youth with the goal of building trust, strengthening relationships, and ultimately helping to create safe and nurturing environments. Attends scheduled departmental meetings, training and workshops as directed. Maintains records and documentation electronically. Collects and enters information and completes forms and/or reports in a timely manner on department-issued devices and according to BPS policies and procedures. Maintain communication with students and families in-person, via email and/or phone Serves as a member of the district’s Crisis Response Team. Consistently attend community meetings and provide regular updates on the meetings Knowledge of social media platforms and internet safety practices that promote safe and appropriate usage Ability to either work 8am-4pm shift or 11am-7pm shift and on weekends when needed Support home visits with school based administrators or other BPS support staff Collaborate with Succeed Boston and school based staff to ensure that individual student success plans are implemented and are effective Connect and support students with youth employment opportunities and training. Provide ongoing mentoring to students as needed Performs other appropriate duties that may be assigned by the Chief of Safety Services and/or Division Chief of Student Support. Minimum Entrance Qualifications: HS diploma or equivalent (HiSet, GED) Understanding and knowledge around the impact and implication that exposure to trauma can have on youth development. Demonstrable experience working within the communities impacted by violence and a willingness to serve as a liaison to resources that create safe partnerships is required. Strong conflict resolution skills and ability to de-escalate situations and maintain professional demeanor in stressful situations required. Ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality. Ability to collect and enter information and complete necessary forms. Must be able to work evenings and weekends. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job. Demonstrable experience building trust with youth and families Qualifications - Preferred: Knowledge of social media platforms BA/BS in related studies or minimum 5 years of full-time work experience Understanding of the complexities in urban neighborhoods as it pertains to community violence and the juvenile justice reform practices. Possession of a valid MA Driver's license City of Boston Residency Multilingual Knowledge of Boston’s neighborhoods, communities and schools Terms: Managerial, B21.
